Gem vouchers, gift codes, and free gems sound similar but they are three different things with three different journeys. This article explains what each one is, where to find it, what you can do with it, and how to fix a code that will not redeem.

A gem voucher is a replacement issued for a card that is no longer available, or as compensation, and it lives in the Vouchers tab of your inventory. You can exchange a voucher in the Marketplace for a graded slab, withdraw it in crypto if you have crypto access, or sell it for gems. A gift code is a code supplied by the BOXED team and redeemed under Refill Gems, then Gift Code. Free gems from gem drops, missions, daily rewards, and similar on-site sources credit straight to your balance with no code to enter.

Occasionally a card you pull is no longer physically available to us, for example a rare one-of-one or an item from a vending machine that has since been claimed. Rather than leaving you with nothing, we issue a gem voucher of equivalent value in its place. Gem vouchers are also used as compensation in situations where an item cannot be provided as expected.

You will find your vouchers in the Vouchers tab of your inventory, alongside the Cards, Skins, Items, and Limited Items tabs.

A gem voucher is not itself a physical item, so it cannot be shipped to you on its own. What you can do if you want something physical is exchange the voucher in the Marketplace for a graded slab, and then withdraw that slab to your address in the US, Canada, or the UK.

One limit worth knowing: a Forge box can contain a maximum of one gem voucher, so a Forge box you build yourself cannot be filled with vouchers alone.

Gift codes are alphanumeric codes supplied by the BOXED team, for example as part of a promotion or a creator giveaway. Redeeming one converts it into gems on your balance.

The gems appear on your balance right away, and you can confirm the credit under Account, then Balance History.

Two different error messages can appear, and they mean different things. Identifying which one you have is the fastest way to a fix.

This message means the code is the wrong length, so it has been rejected before it was even looked up. It is a formatting problem rather than a problem with the code itself. What to do:

This message means the code is the right length but does not match a valid, unclaimed code. In practice that is either a typing error or a code that has already been claimed, since gift codes are single use and a code somebody else has redeemed will not work again. What to do:

Gems earned on-site do not use codes at all. They credit directly to your balance, and each one is listed under Account, then Balance History. The main sources are:

Items obtained from the free signup box start out restricted: they cannot be sold or withdrawn until you have purchased at least 500 gems on your account. Once you have made a gem purchase of 500 gems or more, those items unlock and behave like any other item in your inventory. Yes, you can turn a gem voucher into gems. Open the Vouchers tab in your inventory, choose the voucher, and select the option to sell it. The voucher's value is added to your gem balance straight away and can be spent anywhere on the site.

You can enter a gift code by opening Refill Gems, also shown as Get Gems, and selecting Gift Code. Enter the code exactly as supplied and confirm, and the gems will be added to your balance immediately.

The two messages point to different problems. "This gift code is invalid!" means the code is the wrong length, so check that you have copied the whole code with nothing extra attached. "This code is invalid!" means the length is right but the code does not match an unclaimed code, which usually means a typing error or a code that has already been redeemed.

A gift code showing as invalid means either the code is the wrong length, was mistyped, or has already been claimed, since every code is single use. Re-check that you have the complete code with no extra characters, paste it rather than typing it, and confirm in Balance History that you have not already redeemed it. If you are confident the code is correct, complete, and unused, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

No, gem drops do not need a code. Gems from drops, missions, daily rewards, and other on-site sources credit directly to your balance, and you can confirm each credit under Account, then Balance History.

Gem vouchers are tied to your inventory and cannot be transferred to another player, and BOXED does not support player-to-player selling, trading, or gifting of items. A gift code is different, because it is just a code, so whoever holds it can redeem it once. That is why creators are able to run giveaways with them.

Gift codes are single use and may carry an expiry date, depending on the promotion they were issued for. Redeem a code as soon as you receive it, and check the promotion or giveaway it came from for any stated deadline.
