Crypto (ETH) withdrawals

How to withdraw value from BOXED as Ethereum (ETH): the verification you need, how crypto access is approved, wallet compatibility, timings, and fixes for the most common errors.

You can withdraw the value held in your BOXED account as Ethereum (ETH). This article covers what you need before the option appears, how crypto access is approved, which wallets work, how long a withdrawal takes, and how to fix the errors we see most often.

Quick summary

Crypto withdrawals are sent as ETH on the Ethereum network. Before you can use them, you need completed identity verification (KYC), a verified phone number, an EVM-compatible wallet address that you control, and crypto withdrawal access approved on your account. Some accounts receive that access automatically and others have to request it, and every approval is reviewed by hand by our Risk team. Send only to a wallet that can receive directly on the Ethereum network, because some exchange receiving addresses reject transfers of this kind.

What you need before you can withdraw ETH

  • Completed identity verification (KYC). This is the document check powered by Veriff. See how to verify your identity (KYC).

  • A verified phone number. This is a separate check from KYC and both are required. See phone verification: supported numbers and codes.

  • An EVM-compatible Ethereum wallet address that you control. The address has to be able to receive ETH directly on the Ethereum network.

  • Crypto withdrawal access approved on your account. This is a distinct permission from KYC and phone verification, and it is explained in the next section.

If any one of these is missing, the crypto option either will not appear or will not complete. Working through them in the order above is the fastest route.

How crypto access is approved

Crypto access is not automatic for everybody, and which path applies to you depends on how you have purchased gems in the past.

  • If you have never used a credit or debit card on your account, crypto access is granted automatically once both KYC and phone verification are complete. There is nothing extra to request.

  • If you have ever purchased gems with a card, crypto access is a separate request. Go to Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods, and request crypto access there.

One behaviour catches people out. Making your first card purchase can temporarily remove crypto wallet access from an account that previously had it. This is a routine risk check rather than a penalty, and it is not permanent. What you can do is request access again from Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods, and it is restored once re-approved.

Every crypto access decision is reviewed manually by our Risk team, so approval is not instant and there is no way to speed it up from your side. If your request has been sitting for longer than you would expect, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

How to withdraw ETH

  1. Confirm that KYC, phone verification, and crypto access are all in place on your account.

  2. Go to Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods, and add the Ethereum wallet address you want to use. Editing withdrawal methods requires a verified phone number.

  3. Start the withdrawal and enter the amount. The applicable limits and any fee are displayed on screen before you confirm.

  4. Check the destination address character by character. Blockchain transfers cannot be recalled once they are broadcast, so an address typed or pasted incorrectly cannot be undone.

  5. Confirm. The withdrawal moves into processing and appears in your withdrawal history.

Choosing the right wallet

Withdrawals are sent as ETH on the Ethereum (EVM) network, so the receiving address has to support that network natively. The safest choice is a self-custody EVM wallet that you control.

The most common failure we see is a withdrawal sent to a centralised exchange receiving address. Many exchanges do not accept transfers sent directly from a contract, so the transfer can be rejected or land somewhere that the exchange will not credit. If you want the ETH on an exchange, withdraw to your own self-custody wallet first, then move it on from there yourself.

Checking your transaction on the blockchain

Once a withdrawal has been sent, it is publicly verifiable. Take the transaction hash or your receiving wallet address and look it up on etherscan.io. That tells you whether the transaction was broadcast, how many confirmations it has, and which address it reached. If Etherscan shows the transaction as confirmed to your address, the transfer has completed on our side and anything further sits with your wallet or exchange provider.

How long it takes

Once submitted, crypto withdrawals usually process within about a day. Network conditions can add time on top of that. If yours is still showing as pending well beyond that window, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it. Stage-by-stage detail on what each withdrawal status means is in withdrawal fees, limits and status.

Fees and limits

Withdrawal limits and any applicable fee vary by account and are always shown at the point of withdrawal, before you confirm anything. If the amount you want exceeds the limit shown, you can submit a smaller withdrawal now and the remainder later.

Buying gems with crypto

Crypto also works in the other direction, for purchasing gems. That flow supports Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), USDC, and USDT, with a minimum crypto gem purchase of 1,000 gems. Conversion rates refresh every 5 minutes, so the quoted rate is only valid for a short window.

Network confirmations required before gems are credited:

  • BTC: 2 confirmations

  • ETH: 14 confirmations

  • USDC: 14 confirmations

  • USDT: 14 confirmations

If a crypto gem purchase has not credited, see why didn't my gem purchase go through.

Where crypto withdrawals are not available

BOXED is not available at all in Michigan, Washington, Louisiana, and South Carolina. That is a complete platform restriction rather than a payment-method one, so crypto is not a workaround for it and neither is anything else. If you are elsewhere and an action is being blocked, see regional availability and "action not permitted" errors.

Common errors and how to fix them

What you are seeing

What to do

Wrong network selected on the receiving side

Use an address that receives ETH natively on the Ethereum network. Re-check the network label in your wallet before you confirm.

Sent to an exchange address that will not credit it

Withdraw to a self-custody EVM wallet you control, then transfer onward to the exchange yourself.

Crypto option is missing entirely

Complete KYC and phone verification, then request access under Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods.

Access disappeared after a card purchase

Request crypto access again from Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods. It is restored once the Risk team re-approves it.

Withdrawal pending well beyond a day

Look the transaction up on etherscan.io first. If nothing has been broadcast, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

Common questions

Why can I not withdraw crypto?

You cannot withdraw crypto until four things are true on your account: identity verification (KYC) is complete, your phone number is verified, you have an EVM-compatible wallet address saved, and crypto withdrawal access has been approved. Check each in turn, and request access under Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods, if it has not been granted automatically.

Can I withdraw a coin other than ETH?

No, crypto withdrawals from BOXED are sent as ETH only. You can purchase gems using BTC, ETH, USDC, or USDT, but the withdrawal side supports ETH on the Ethereum network exclusively. If you want a different asset, withdraw the ETH to a wallet you control and convert it there.

Why did my crypto access disappear after I bought gems with a card?

A first card purchase can temporarily remove crypto wallet access while the account is re-reviewed, which is a standard risk check rather than a restriction on your account. You can get access back by requesting it again under Account Settings, then Withdraw Methods, and our Risk team will re-approve it.

How long does crypto access approval take?

Crypto access approval is handled manually by our Risk team, so it is not instant and the timing varies with review volume. If your request has been outstanding longer than you would expect, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

My withdrawal is still pending. What should I do?

If your crypto withdrawal is still pending, most clear within about a day, so first check whether the transaction has been broadcast by searching your wallet address on etherscan.io. If Etherscan shows nothing after that window has passed, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

Can I use crypto if I am in Michigan, Washington, Louisiana, or South Carolina?

No, crypto withdrawals are not available in those states, because BOXED itself is not available in Michigan, Washington, Louisiana, or South Carolina at all. This is a full platform restriction rather than a payment restriction, so there is no crypto, gift code, or alternative method that works around it.

Can I withdraw crypto without completing identity verification?

No, crypto withdrawals require completed identity verification (KYC) in every case, alongside phone verification. What you can do in the meantime is use the other options available for your items, such as selling them back for gems or, if you are in the US, Canada, or the UK, withdrawing a physical card.
