Luckback: shards & the Luckback Market

How Luckback shards are earned, where to find your shard balance and the Luckback Market, what the 7 tiers cost, and what you can do with an item after you buy it.

Luckback is a built-in rewards feature on BOXED that gives you something back when a pull does not go your way. Whenever an item you pull is worth less than the gems you spent, BOXED automatically credits you with Luckback shards. You then spend those shards in the Luckback Market, a rotating storefront with seven tiers of items that refreshes every day.

Summary

  • Luckback shards are earned automatically. There is nothing to claim, activate, or opt into.

  • You earn shards when the value of a pull is lower than the gems you spent on it.

  • Shards are spent in the Luckback Market, which has 7 tiers and refreshes daily.

  • Shards are a separate balance from gems and cannot be converted back into gems. They can be spent on Market items, and anything you get from the Market lands in your inventory, where you can sell it back for gems, withdraw it, exchange it, or display it.

  • Luckback Market purchases are final once confirmed, so the moment to check is before you press confirm.

How you earn Luckback shards

Luckback runs in the background on eligible openings. When you open a box or play an eligible experience and the item you receive is worth less in gems than the amount you spent, BOXED calculates the shortfall and credits Luckback shards to your shard balance.

A few things worth knowing about how this works in practice:

  • You do not need to claim anything. Shards post to your balance as part of the opening itself.

  • The bigger the shortfall, the more shards you earn. A pull that comes in only slightly under what you spent earns fewer shards than one that comes in well under.

  • Pulls that come out ahead do not generate shards. Luckback only applies when the result is worth less than what you spent, because there is nothing to give back otherwise.

  • Your shard balance carries over. Shards do not reset when the Market refreshes, so you can save them across several days toward a higher tier item.

Luckback shards are also given out as level rewards at certain levels, which is covered in Levels, XP and daily rewards. If you want to understand how results themselves are generated and verify them independently, see Provably Fair.

Where to find the Luckback Market and your shard balance

The Luckback Market lives in the Luckback section of BOXED, reached from the main navigation. Your current shard balance is displayed at the top of that section, alongside the tiers, so you can always see what you have and what it will reach. Your shard balance is shown there rather than next to your gem balance, because shards and gems are tracked separately.

If the Luckback section does not load, refresh the page. Shard balances update as part of the opening itself, so a stale page is the most common reason a balance looks wrong.

The 7 tiers and what they cost

The Market is organised into 7 tiers. Lower tiers cost fewer shards and hold more accessible items, and higher tiers cost more shards and hold more valuable items. Shard costs run from 250 shards at Tier 1, which holds items worth under 20 gems, up to 100,000 shards at Tier 7, which holds items worth under 8,000 gems. The tiers in between step up between those two points.

Because your shard balance carries over from day to day, saving toward a higher tier is a perfectly normal way to use Luckback rather than spending on every refresh. There is no penalty for holding shards and no expiry on them.

The selection refreshes daily. If you see something you want, it is worth acting on it that day, because the specific items on offer change with each refresh. The tiers themselves stay in place, and it is the items inside them that rotate.

Making a Luckback Market purchase

  1. Open the Luckback section and check your available shard balance at the top.

  2. Browse the seven tiers and select the item you want.

  3. Review the shard cost and the item details carefully.

  4. Confirm the purchase. The shards are deducted and the item is added to your inventory.

Luckback Market purchases are final. Once you confirm, the purchase cannot be undone, reversed, or refunded back into shards, so take a moment to check the item before you confirm. Everything before that point is reversible: you can change your selection, back out of a tier, or leave the Market entirely without spending a shard.

After you confirm, you still control what happens to the item. Everything you buy from the Market goes into your inventory just like any other item, so you can sell it back for gems, withdraw it as a physical card, exchange it for a different item of similar value, or display it on your profile. See Cards: sell back, withdraw, exchange or display for a comparison of those options, Withdrawing a physical card if you want the item shipped to you, and Binders if you want to display it.

Shards compared with gems

Shards and gems are two separate balances and they are not interchangeable.

  • Gems are the main BOXED balance. You can purchase them, earn them, and spend them across the whole site. See Gems: the complete guide.

  • Shards are earned through Luckback and level rewards, and they can only be spent in the Luckback Market. There is no direct conversion from shards into gems.

Although shards themselves do not convert to gems, there is a practical route from one to the other. Items bought with shards have a sell-back value, so if your goal is gems rather than the item, you can buy a Market item with shards and then sell that item back for gems from your inventory. That is the only way shards reach your gem balance, and it depends on the sell-back value of the item you choose.

Troubleshooting

My shards did not appear after an unlucky pull

Shard balances update as part of the opening, so refresh the page or restart the app and check the Luckback section again. It is also worth confirming that the pull really did come out below what you spent, since Luckback only triggers on results worth less than the gems spent. If your balance still looks wrong after refreshing, please ask to speak to a human and our team will look into it.

The item I wanted is gone from the Market

The Luckback Market refreshes daily, so items rotate out. The tier structure stays the same and similar items reappear across future refreshes, so checking back the next day is the right move. Your shards are unaffected by the refresh and remain in your balance.

Common questions

How do I earn Luckback shards?

You earn Luckback shards automatically whenever a pull comes out worth less than the gems you spent on it. There is nothing to claim, because the shards are added to your shard balance as part of the opening. Some levels also award shards as a level reward.

Where do I find the Luckback Market and my shard balance?

You can find the Luckback Market in the Luckback section of BOXED, reached from the main navigation. Your current shard balance is shown at the top of that section, next to the available tiers.

Can I turn Luckback shards back into gems?

Luckback shards cannot be converted directly back into gems, because shards can only be spent in the Luckback Market. There is an indirect route, though: items you buy in the Market go to your inventory, and from there you can sell them back for gems, withdraw them, exchange them, or display them.

What do the Luckback Market tiers cost?

The Luckback Market has 7 tiers, and shard costs run from 250 shards at Tier 1, which holds items worth under 20 gems, up to 100,000 shards at Tier 7, which holds items worth under 8,000 gems. The tiers in between step up between those two points.

Does the Luckback Market change?

Yes, the Luckback Market refreshes daily. It is organised into 7 tiers, and the specific items inside those tiers rotate with each daily refresh while the tier structure stays the same.

Can I cancel or refund a Luckback Market purchase?

A Luckback Market purchase cannot be cancelled or refunded into shards once you confirm it. Up until you confirm, you can change your selection or leave without spending anything, and after you confirm you still choose what happens to the item, since it goes into your inventory and can be sold back for gems, withdrawn, exchanged, or displayed.

Do my shards expire when the Market refreshes?

Your shards do not expire or reset when the Luckback Market refreshes. Your balance carries over, so you can save shards across several days and spend them on a higher tier item.

Do I earn shards on every opening?

You earn Luckback shards only on openings where the result is worth less than the gems you spent. Openings that come out ahead of what you spent do not generate shards, because there is nothing to give back in that case.
